The Palin Effect

September 22, 2008

The Palin Effect
Probably the most blogged about topic in the last few weeks.

I met some american ladies today and in the course of conversation one of them mentioned that one of them were from Illinois. I couldn’t resist asking what they thought of their senator Obama. Voted for him for the senate and to quote “I wont make that mistake again”. Intrigued at the polling sample i had before me I pressed on. I was told that the only choices that they then had was to vote for John or stay home. From the tone of voice i gather neither choice was preferable. Until they revealed that the key person in the whole acquasion was the governor of Alaska. For them  Sarah Palin was giving them a reason to consider the conservative ticket. Now obviously this is a purely a personal account of two people I met. However I do believe too many people on this side of the ocean consider the Palin Effect to be purely a  gimmick. If so its one that is working to at least wrestle the spotlight from the scrapping Dems and give conservatives the chance to consider the republican ticket.

Politics and Friends

July 26, 2008

Twice now over the last few months have i mentioned politics in the company of different friends. I have done so at an appropriate point in the conversation when it was leading that way, specifically US politics. I was amazed to see how shunned i was on mentioning how I would have ideas similar to the US Republican Party.

Is our country so liberal or scared of the conservatism we used to endure, to be open to the idea that there are more than democratic ideas out there? I wouldn’t follow religiously a Bush or McCain Doctrine (or an Obama or Clinton one for that matter) but there are elements that i would like in my society.

I am by no means saying that my ideas are automatically right but i am stunned by how little willingness there was to engage with the ideas rather than just dismiss them. I wonder if a Democrat suggested them would that be different and its just the name republican that is disliked. Or is it just cool to be for O’bama & Co?

Yes. We. Can. (discuss?)
